Pannier, panniers, bags, boxes, baskets, saddlebags...containers for carrying stuff on your bike, your horse, your mule. Pannier :: derived from Latin via French meaning "bread basket". A bit difficult to pronounce for the English tongue perhaps, but somehow poetic, since bread and bike roll together (with apologies to the gluten intolerant).
Panniers come in all shapes and sizes. Our website is full of examples. But, in our mind we make a distinction between the more technically evolved species and the more basic everybag. The former we call panniers and this section is about them. The latter we tend to name as bags and totes, and you can find them under urban bike bags . Not that panniers aren't suitable for the daily grind in urban space. They do quite nicely, but they may be more bag than you need. Panniers are typically sold in pairs, our totes and bags come in singles. It's a bikestyle choice.
For committed bicycle touring nothing beats a solid pair of waterproof, welded panniers. Miles from nowhere is not the time to discover that the money you saved, on those close-out specials falling off your rack, will now be spent on duct tape and bailing wire.
We make two styles of bags for serious touring. The ROVER series panniers are welded and waterproof lockers for your happiness, on the road and off. Their design and construction is best summed up as simplicity meets functionality. The S/CAPE series are trad sewn panniers with a lower price of admission. They'll keep your stuff dry with the included raincover, though we still recommend lining the inside of your panniers with a large leaf bag for extra insurance - an old bike touring standby.
